Services overview

Finding an editor for a book doesn’t have to be overwhelming

If you’re trying to figure out whether you need an editor, a fiction writing coach, or something in between, you’re not alone.

Most writers don’t struggle because they don’t want to revise—they struggle because they don’t know what kind of support will actually help their book at its current stage.

  • Too much feedback too early can derail a project.
  • The wrong kind of edit can cost time, money, and momentum.

At Plots & Parchment, I offer developmental editing and novel writing coaching services designed around where your draft is now, not where it “should” be.

Every service is clearly defined, story-focused, and built to give you clarity—not overwhelm.

This page will help you find the right fit.

How to choose the right kind of support

Different drafts need different depths of feedback. That’s why each offer below is tied to a specific stage of the writing process—so you’re not paying for feedback you can’t use yet.

Planning, Plotting, and Worldbuilding

Ideas need structure and strategy

A clear path to revision

Early drafts need clarity

Focus and hit the finish line

Later drafts need focus

Story Planning & Outlining

(Before drafting or early in the process)

For writers at the idea, concept, or outline stage.

This support helps you clarify your premise, structure, and character arcs before drafting—saving time and preventing major rewrites later.

Choose from single sessions or multi-session packages depending on how much support you want.

Early Draft Story Assessment

(Before drafting or early in the process)

If your draft feels messy, unfinished, or directionless, this high-level manuscript evaluation helps you understand what’s actually happening in the story—without overwhelming you with line-by-line edits.

Instead of in-manuscript comments, you’ll receive a clear, focused assessment covering:

  • What’s working
  • What’s getting in the way
  • What to prioritize next

This option is ideal if:

  • You keep rewriting the beginning without progress
  • You know something’s off but can’t name it yet
  • You want guidance before committing to a full edit

You’ll leave with: clarity, validation, and a concrete next-step plan.

Developmental Editing

(Complete drafts that may have already been through some revision)

If your draft has already been revised and you’re ready for story-level feedback, the Big Picture Story Edit offers three levels of developmental editing—each using the same editorial approach, scaled by scope and depth.

All Big Picture Story Edits focus on:

  • Structure and pacing
  • Character motivation and emotional stakes
  • Scene purpose and progression
  • Where the story loses momentum—or power

This is collaborative developmental editing that strengthens your novel without overwriting your voice.

Big Picture Story Edit — Focused

This option is best if you don’t need a full manuscript edit, but you do need experienced story-level feedback on a specific section of your book.

Writers often choose this when:

  • One section of the manuscript keeps causing problems
  • They want confirmation they’re revising in the right direction
  • They want to experience developmental editing before committing to a full edit

You’ll receive in-manuscript developmental comments on a limited page count, plus clear guidance you can apply to the rest of the manuscript. This package starts at $350.

Big Picture Story Edit — Comprehensive

(A full developmental edit for complete or near-complete manuscripts)

This is a deep, story-wide developmental edit designed to help you understand exactly how your novel is functioning—and how to revise it with intention.

This option is ideal if:

  • You’ve revised as far as you can on your own
  • You want a big-picture perspective you can trust
  • You’re preparing for publication and want the story to hold up

You’ll receive detailed in-manuscript comments throughout the book, along with a clear revision roadmap. This package starts at $3,400.

Big Picture Story Edit — Comprehensive + Support

(A developmental edit plus guided revision support)

This option is for writers who want help implementing feedback—not just receiving it.

This is the best fit if:

  • You want accountability during revision
  • You work better with ongoing guidance
  • You want both editing and coaching support

In addition to a full developmental edit, you’ll receive structured revision support, including coaching touchpoints and follow-up guidance, so you’re not left alone to interpret or second-guess every decision. Packages start at $4,600.

Ongoing Support

Monthly Story Coaching

(While drafting or revising)

Monthly fiction writing coaching for writers who want an experienced second brain while they work.

This option provides flexible, story-level support through calls or asynchronous feedback and is ideal if you want:

  • Accountability without pressure
  • A place to ask focused story questions
  • Help thinking through revisions as they come up

This option does not include manuscript editing and is best suited as ongoing support for projects I'm familiar with.

Not sure which option is right?

If you’re still unsure how to find the right editor or coach for your book, that’s okay. You don’t need to self-diagnose before asking for help. I’m happy to help you sort out the best next step—honestly, and without upselling.
